License the dataset

Datestone is built on a hand-curated dataset of roughly 15,000 historical events, each one geolocated and dated. It is available to license for use in other products.

What's in it

One record per event, with:

  • title and a one-line description
  • coordinates (latitude and longitude)
  • date - year always, month and day where known
  • country and continent
  • category (war, politics, science, culture, disaster, exploration, and so on)
  • an importance tier, derived from cross-wiki coverage
  • the Wikidata ID and English Wikipedia link
  • a longer summary paragraph, where available

Delivered as JSON, GeoJSON or CSV. A one-time snapshot or a feed with periodic updates.

What it's good for

Education and classroom tools, trivia and quiz games, museum and exhibition installations, "on this day" apps and bots, historical atlases and timelines, data-visualisation projects, and worldbuilding or research tools that need a clean, broad set of geolocated events without scraping and cleaning it themselves.

Provenance and terms

The structured fields - titles, coordinates, dates, categories and Wikidata IDs - are derived from Wikidata, which is public domain (CC0). The selection, geocoding checks, deduplication and importance tiering are Datestone's own work, and that curated compilation is what the licence covers.

The summary paragraphs come from English Wikipedia and are available under its CC BY-SA 4.0 terms, with attribution and share-alike. They can be included with those terms attached, or left out.

Pricing depends on scope and whether you need updates. Academic and non-commercial use is discounted or free. Get in touch with what you're building and I'll send terms.
