A MOMENT IN HISTORY
Treaty of Chicago
1821 CE · United States, North America · Politics
The Treaty of Chicago refers to two land-cession treaties signed at Chicago between the United States and the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi peoples. In the 1821 treaty the tribes ceded most of their land in southwestern Michigan; the 1833 treaty ceded the remaining territory around the southern end of Lake Michigan in exchange for reservations west of the Mississippi and annuity payments. The agreements opened the region to American settlement and led to the removal of the Potawatomi.
