A MOMENT IN HISTORY
Mutilation of the Hermai
414 BCE · Europe · War
In 415 BC, on the eve of the Athenian expedition to Sicily, most of the marble herms across Athens - pillars bearing the head of Hermes that stood at doorways and crossroads - were found mutilated in a single night. The sacrilege caused panic and was read as a bad omen for the expedition and a possible plot against the democracy. Suspicion fell on Alcibiades, and the ensuing investigation led to his recall from Sicily and his defection to Sparta.
